This week, the Lehigh University Police Department (LUPD) managed approximately 166 calls for service. The campus climate remained active with a high volume of student service requests, including 35 residential or building lockouts. Several medical responses were handled where University Medical Amnesty policies were applied to prioritize student safety. No incidents of bias-motivated harassment or crimes were reported this week.

SIGNIFICANT INCIDENTS & CRIMES

Crimes Against Property/Person

  • Retail Theft: A student was identified for bypassing payment gates at the Clayton University Center "Clutch and Go". The student admitted to the act, agreed to provide financial restitution, and the matter was referred to the Dean of Students.

  • Theft Reports: LUPD investigated reports involving a missing water bottle at the Rauch Business Center and a stolen wallet at the EWFM Library. These incidents were closed as the victims declined to prosecute or the actors were unknown.

  • Physical Altercation: Members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Chi fraternities were involved in an off-campus physical altercation involving 15–20 individuals. One student reported injuries but declined to file charges; the incident was documented and referred to the University.

  • Lewd Conduct: A non-Lehigh male was arrested by the Bethlehem Police Department for exposing himself in a vehicle parked near Hillside Avenue. The individual was subsequently issued a permanent trespass order from all Lehigh University property.

Fraud/Drugs/Liquor

  • High-Level Intoxication: Three students required medical transport to the hospital for high levels of intoxication at Farrington Square, Lookout Drive, and Sigma Phi Delta.

  • Medical Amnesty: In separate incidents at Dravo House and Sigma Phi Delta, students were granted Medical Amnesty after help was sought for an intoxicated individual.

  • False Identification: One fraudulent Rhode Island driver's license was recovered off-campus and traced back to a student, who was referred to the Dean of Students for a conduct review.

Facilities & Hazards

  • Gas Odor Investigations: LUPD and the Bethlehem Fire Department investigated reports of gas smells at Hitch House and an off-campus residence on 5th Street. Both locations were cleared and deemed safe.

  • Infrastructure: Upper Sayre Park Road was temporarily closed this week to allow for the repair of a broken water line.

SECURITY ALARMS & UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS

Suspicious Activity

  • Unauthorized Building Access: An investigation into suspicious activity at House 85 revealed that a former student-employee was misusing "Gryphon level" card access. The individual’s access was revoked, and the matter was referred to Residence Life.

  • General Reports: Officers investigated reports of a suspicious motorcycle in the Alpha Phi parking lot and a suspicious vehicle interaction near 4th and Vine. In both cases, the vehicles left the area without further incident.

Security Breaches

  • Discovered Openings: Security guards and officers discovered and secured unauthorized open doors at the University Center, Imbt Laboratories, and Ulrich Fields.

  • Hazardous Access Points: Multiple ground-floor windows at Grace Hall were found open and unsecured; officers secured the building and conducted a safety walkthrough.

Alarms

  • Burglar Alarms: Three burglar alarms were investigated at the Zoellner Arts Center, Building J, and Transportation Services. All were determined to be accidental or false activations and were successfully reset.

  • Door Alarms: 12 "Door Prop" or "Extended Door" alarms were handled. Most resulted from staff loading equipment or students working late; all doors were subsequently secured.

TRAFFIC STOPS & ENFORCEMENT

  • Traffic Safety: Five traffic stops were conducted this week. Violations included excessive speed, driving the wrong way on one-way streets, unauthorized vehicle use on pedestrian walkways, and using interactive mobile devices. All drivers were issued verbal or written warnings and educated on safe driving habits.

SERVICE & LOGISTICS

  • Lockouts: LUPD handled 35 residential and building lockouts for students, faculty, and staff. One vehicle lockout was also successfully resolved.

  • Welfare Checks: Six welfare checks were conducted for students reported as missing class, unresponsive to family, or appearing in distress. All students were contacted, confirmed safe, and provided with counseling resources where appropriate.

  • Assistance & Medical: LUPD provided two courtesy transports for student safety, assisted with five minor injury reports (coordinated with Lehigh EMS), and handled one request for a vehicle jump-start.
