WEEKLY LUPD ACTIVITY SUMMARY
May 4, 2026 – May 10, 2026
During this reporting period, the Lehigh University Police Department handled a total volume of 117 calls for service. The general campus climate was heavily influenced by end-of-semester move-out procedures and final examinations, resulting in a high frequency of residential assistance requests and service logistics.
SIGNIFICANT INCIDENTS & CRIMES
- Arrests in Previous Case: Four Lehigh students have been arrested for their role in entering House 84 during the previous week. Charges of Criminal Trespass have been filed by LUPD, and they have also been referred to Student Conduct.
- Crimes Against Property/Person: A student reported receiving offensive and harassing text messages from a roommate and associated acquaintances. The roommate was ordered to cease all communication, and the incident was referred to the Dean of Students. Additionally, an initial report of stolen property from a vehicle at McClintic-Marshall House was investigated and reclassified as a non-criminal incident after it was determined a family member had taken the items by mistake during move-out.
- Conduct & Trespass: LUPD assisted the Allentown Police Department regarding an investigation into a contracted Sodexo employee for alleged inappropriate conduct occurring off-campus. The individual was identified on campus, served with a trespass letter, and escorted from University property.
- Fraud & Liquor (Medical Amnesty): Officers and Bethlehem EMS responded to a report of an unresponsive student in an Uber on campus. The student was found to have a BAC of .177%. Because a third-party caller initiated the report and remained on the scene, medical amnesty under the Timothy Piazza Anti-Hazing and Safe Harbor Act was applied; the student was transported for medical evaluation and referred to Student Conduct rather than facing arrest for the alcohol offense. Two fraudulent driver's licenses were also confiscated during the investigation.
- Facilities & Hazards: A Sodexo employee sustained severe burns to the face, hands, and chest after a propane-related explosion at a wood-fired pizza trailer located on the Memorial Walkway. The employee was transported to a regional medical center for specialized treatment.
SECURITY ALARMS & UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS
- Suspicious Activity: A report of a suspicious male lying in the grass at the Rauch Business Center was investigated; it was determined the individual was a retired professor resting before a campus event. A report of a "homeless" individual near the residence halls was identified as a uniformed employee walking to their shift. Additionally, "pop-it" fireworks were reportedly thrown in the EWFM Library lobby; a building walkthrough was conducted, but no suspects were located.
- Security Breaches: An officer discovered an open machine shop door propped with a stool at Building C on Mountaintop Campus; machinery was running while the area was unoccupied. At Taylor Gym, multiple doors were found unsecured, including one held open with duct tape covering the locking mechanism. All areas were successfully secured.
- Alarms: LUPD responded to 11 Door Prop/Held alarms and 4 Trouble alarms. Maintenance work orders were issued for faulty mechanisms at Maginnes Hall and Taylor Gym.
TRAFFIC STOPS & ENFORCEMENT
- Traffic Stops: Three traffic stops were conducted this week. Reasons for stops included operating at unsafe speeds (aggressive acceleration near hairpin curves), stop sign violations, and operating a vehicle without headlights after dusk. All drivers involved were issued verbal warnings.
- Check Vehicle: An abandoned vehicle with no registration or parking permit was found at Stabler Arena; a parking ticket was issued.
SERVICE & LOGISTICS
- Lockouts: LUPD assisted with 42 residential and building lockouts.
- Welfare Checks: Six "Check Person" calls were performed. This included a student experiencing a mental health crisis involving hearing voices and self-harm ideation; the student was voluntarily transported to a hospital for evaluation. A separate welfare check at Southside Commons regarding a noise complaint found no injuries, and the student declined further services.
- Assistance & Medical: Officers provided transportation for a student who passed out during a final exam due to a severe headache and another student who suffered an allergic reaction. General services included one vehicle jump-start and a safety escort for the Bursar's Office during a bank deposit.
TRENDS & LESSONS LEARNED
Move-out activities have directly contributed to a rise in unsecured facilities. Residents are strongly advised to keep dormitory doors locked and to never use tape or other obstructions to bypass security locks, as this compromises the safety of everyone in the building. Furthermore, motorists are reminded to adhere to the 15 MPH speed limit on campus roads, particularly near high-pedestrian residence areas.
